You push yourself up from the couch, and within seconds the room tilts, your heart starts pounding, and you're gripping the nearest piece of furniture just to stay upright. With postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, that automatic adjustment doesn't work the way it should. Blood pools more than it's supposed to in your legs and abdomen, so less of it makes it back up to your heart and brain. Your heart tries to compensate the only way it knows how, by beating faster and faster, sometimes jumping thirty beats per minute or more within just a few minutes of standing.
